We, the undersigned, call on the UK Government to introduce legislation to end factory farming.

Factory farming is industrial-scale animal cruelty. Millions of animals are bred to grow unnaturally fast, confined so tightly they cannot move freely, and processed through mechanised systems where speed and profit matter more than life or wellbeing.
Factory farming causes widespread harm beyond animal suffering. It pollutes rivers with slurry, destroys wildlife, and accelerates antibiotic resistance, threatening human health. Local communities bear the environmental and health costs while corporations take the profits.
This is not a failure of oversight. This system is designed to maximise output at minimum cost, no matter the range and scale of harm caused.
In the UK, more than half of the public supports a ban on factory farming. Yet, factory farming accounts for approximately 85% of UK meat and dairy production, not because the public supports this system, but because it is hidden from view and politically protected.
Over the past 80 years, deliberate political and economic decisions have led to the replacement of small-scale farming by high-density, high-throughput industrial systems. Just five companies, Cargill, Boparan, Sofina, JBS, and Cranswick, now control the UK meat supply for virtually every major retailer, from Tesco and Waitrose to Aldi and M&S. They extract billions in profit while harming animals, polluting communities, and driving antibiotic resistance, and they receive public subsidies and grants to do it. We do not want our money to fund animal cruelty and environmental destruction.
This is a moral failure and a political choice. We demand immediate action to:
- Block the construction of new factory farms.
- Hold corporations fully accountable for animal cruelty, environmental damage, and public health risks.
- End factory farming by 2040, enabling a planned transition that supports farmers' adaptation, scales alternatives, and guides policy through consultation, legislation, and implementation.
Factory farming is a system of mass suffering and environmental devastation that the Government continues to allow.
