The chickens in Pret’s supply chain are fast-growing Frankenchickens, sourced from overcrowded, industrial factory farms. The birds are bred to reach slaughter weight in 35 days, a 400% increase in growth rate since the 1950s. Their bodies cannot keep pace with their own growth. Lameness, broken bones, heart attacks, and organ failure are common. The filthy conditions and their speed of growth mean the industry pumps them full of antibiotics to keep them alive long enough to be killed.
In December 2024, the Court of Appeal ruled that animals should not be farmed if it means they will suffer because of how they have been bred. That ruling describes the lives of the birds Pret serves.
In public, Pret says doing the right thing has been at the heart of what they do since they first opened in 1986, but in practice, Pret are making a killing out of factory-farmed Frankenchickens. Tell them to do the right thing.
